The Sermon on the Mount, as described by W. Perkins, may justly be called "the key of the whole Bible," as it opens up the essence of both the Old and New Testaments. This is the longest recorded discourse of our Lord, in which He expounds upon the vital subject of repentance, elucidating its true nature and fruits. As Matthew Henry observed, the sermon is intensely practical, focused more on the "things to be done" rather than the "things to be believed."
The content of the sermon can be divided into the following sections: 1) Introduction, 2) The Beatitudes, 3) The Ministerial Office, 4) Christ and the Law, 5) The Law and Murder, 6) The Law and Adultery, 7) The Law and Oaths, 8) The Law and Retaliation, 9) The Law and Love, 10) The Giving of Alms, 11) Prayer, 12) Fasting, 13) Correcting Covetousness, 14) The Single Eye, 15) Serving God, 16) Forbidding Anxiety, 17) Unlawful Judgment, 18) Judging Others, 19) Dissuasives from Judging Others, 20) Helping Erring Brethren, 21) Unlawful Liberality, 22) Seeking Grace, 23) The Golden Rule, 24) The Way of Salvation, 25) False Prophets, 26) Profession Tested, 27) Conclusion, and 28) Other Books.
The author of this exposition is Arthur W. Pink, an English-born preacher and teacher who was born in 1886 and experienced his spiritual rebirth in 1908 at the age of 22. After a brief stint at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, he went on to pastor churches in various locations, including California, Kentucky, and South Carolina, before moving to Sydney, Australia for a time. In 1934, at the age of 48, Pink returned to his native England, eventually taking up permanent residence in Lewis, Scotland, where he remained until his death in 1952 at the age of 66.
Throughout his life, Pink dedicated himself to studying and expounding upon the Scriptures, producing a vast body of written work that has been widely appreciated by believers seeking deeper theological understanding. His insights into the Sermon on the Mount, as presented in this exposition, offer a thoughtful and practical exploration of this pivotal teaching of Jesus Christ, guiding readers towards a more profound appreciation of its significance and application in the Christian life.
