Gleanings in the Godhead: Complete and Unabridged

The divine character, as revealed in the Scripture, is awe-inspiring and worship-provoking in its grandeur. Yet, comparatively few who occasionally read the Bible are aware of this truth. Many assume that God's greatness in wisdom, His wondrous power, and His full of mercy are common knowledge. However, to entertain anything approaching an adequate conception of His being, nature, and attributes is something that very few people in these degenerate times have accomplished.

God is solitary in His excellency. The Scriptures pose the question, "Who is like unto Thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like Thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?" (Ex. 15:11). This rhetorical question emphasizes the uniqueness and incomparability of the divine character.

The grandeur of God's character is a profound and humbling reality. His wisdom is unsearchable, His power is unparalleled, and His mercy is boundless. Yet, the majority of people today fail to grasp the full extent of these divine attributes. They are content with a superficial understanding, without delving into the depths of the Scriptures to uncover the true nature of the Almighty.

The solitary excellence of God is a truth that should elicit awe and worship from every heart. He stands apart from all other gods, unique in His holiness, fearsome in His praises, and wondrous in His works. To truly comprehend the greatness of the Lord is to be transformed, to be humbled, and to be drawn into a deeper relationship with the sovereign Creator.

Unfortunately, in these degenerate times, such a profound understanding of the divine character is a rarity. The majority of people are content with a cursory knowledge, failing to truly engage with the Scriptures and to allow the majesty of God to captivate their hearts and minds. They miss the opportunity to be awe-struck by the grandeur of the Lord, and to respond in reverent worship.

The call, then, is to rediscover the wonder and splendor of the divine character. To delve into the Scriptures with a humble and open heart, seeking to understand the depths of God's wisdom, power, and mercy. Only then can we truly grasp the solitary excellence of the Lord, and be transformed by the experience of encountering the holy, fearsome, and wondrous God.
