Pursuit of God

A.W. Tozer, an American Christian pastor, preacher, author, magazine editor, Bible conference speaker, and spiritual mentor, was born in 1897 and died in 1963. Hailing from a small farming community in western Pennsylvania, Tozer experienced his conversion as a teenager in Akron, Ohio. In 1919, five years after his conversion and without formal theological training, he accepted an offer to pastor his first church, marking the beginning of his 44-year ministry.

Tozer was a prolific author, writing more than 40 books, with at least two of them being regarded as Christian classics: "The Pursuit of God" and "The Knowledge of the Holy." His books emphasize the possibility and necessity of a deeper relationship with God. Living a simple and non-materialistic lifestyle, Tozer and his wife never owned a car, preferring to travel by bus and train. Even after becoming a well-known Christian author, Tozer signed away much of his royalties to those in need.

Prayer was of vital personal importance for Tozer, and his preaching and writings were extensions of his prayer life. Biographer James L. Snyder, in the book "In Pursuit of God: The Life of A.W. Tozer," comments that Tozer had the ability to make his listeners face themselves in the light of what God was saying to them.

The 2009 reprint of the 1948 first edition of Tozer's work serves as a testament to the enduring impact of his message and the timeless relevance of his insights. Through his life and writings, Tozer has inspired countless individuals to pursue a deeper, more intimate relationship with the divine, and his legacy continues to shape the spiritual landscape of Christianity.
