Following Jesus: True Discipleship to Calvary

Complete devotion to Christ is essential, and anything short of it is inadequate, leading to futility and loss, as A. W. Tozer emphasizes. There is no receiving Christ without the Cross, no receiving Christianity without surrender, and no receiving God without full obedience. Christianity has been watered down, becoming a cheap, inferior substitute of what God intended it to be.

The idea of 'accepting' Jesus has shifted from a revolutionary attachment to an impulsive decision, painless and without cost, and without any concept of discipleship. However, Tozer in True Discipleship states that the choice for anyone who claims to be a Christian is simple – there is no choice, as a Christian must follow Christ, with no alternative.

The purpose of redemption was to restore mankind to its former closeness with God. The goal of every Christian must be an increasingly intimate acquaintance with Him. We must recapture the hope of His returning, and that hope must lift our lives beyond the earthly. With God as our refuge and the source of our strength, and with our eyes on our heavenly future and the promise of Christ's coming, we must yearn to please our Savior and Lord.

The Christian life is not a casual or comfortable one but a call to complete surrender and devotion. We must recognize that anything less than full obedience and commitment to Christ is inadequate and will lead to futility and loss. The true Christian life is one of radical discipleship, where we follow Christ without reservation, seeking to please Him in all things.

As we recapture the hope of Christ's return and the promise of our heavenly future, our lives must be lifted beyond the earthly and focused on our eternal relationship with God. With Him as our refuge and strength, we must yearn to know Him more intimately and to live in a way that brings glory to our Savior and Lord.
